When it comes to buying a masticating juicer, you’ll find they are either vertical or horizontal. Vertical models tend to be newer than horizontal juicers; however the latter still has some advantages. Here we’ll take a look at the difference between vertical and horizontal masticating juicers, as well as their pros and cons.
Vertical masticating juicers are all the rage right now but what’s the difference between them and horizontal juicers? Find out below!
Speed of juicing
Vertical masticating juicers often combine the benefits of centrifugal juicers and masticating juicers, providing an all-in-one solution. Centrifugal juicers are known for producing juice at a faster speed. However, masticating juicers offer much better quality juice and in particular, vertical masticating juicers produce highly nutritious juice at a fast speed.
Horizontal masticating juicers tend to be slower. It is important to know that slow juicing does prevent oxidation and ensures the enzymes, vitamins and minerals remain intact.
Juicing Leafy Greens
If you intend on juicing a lot of leafy greens like wheatgrass, kale, spinach and chard, you will be better off going for a horizontal masticating juicer. Horizontal masticating juicers are better at juicing leafy greens. Most vertical masticating juicers struggle with leafy greens, with the exception of the Hurom Juicer HH 11 2nd Generation Elite models.
Preparation
You will usually find that vertical masticating juicers have a larger feeding chute than their horizontal counterparts. This should mean that you don’t have to do as much preparation with your ingredients, as you would with a horizontal model. This decreases your total juicing time as you spend less time chopping the fruits and vegetables.
Juicing
The design of the vertical masticating models provides ease when juicing as the produce almost goes directly through the feed chute into contact with the augur as the augur is rotating in a vertical manner. Horizontal masting juicers, the augur is rotating in a horizontal manner and hence, you need to use the pusher more frequently to get the produce down the drum into contact with the augur.
Horizontal masticating juicers tend to be cheaper in price.
Ease of Cleaning
The vertical masticating juicers are known to be easier to clean due to the design of the models. The most important feature that makes vertical masticating juicers much easier to clean is the juicing bowl. Most of the new models come with a juice cap. This is very important once juicing is complete. All you have to do is close the juice cap and pour some water down the feed chute which will rotate in the juicing bowl and then you just have to open the juice cap and allow the water to drain out. Once you’ve done that, just run the parts under tap water to wash out any remaining pulp and you’re set for your next juicing session. Horizontal masting juicers do not have this benefit and hence, requires more physical effort using a brush to really get to the difficult parts to ensure no remaining pulp is left.
Other Uses
Many of the horizontal masticating juicers come with extra attachments for juicing, mincing, making pasta noodles and nut butters and sorbets. You can also purchase extra parts such as an oil extractor and salad slicer and ice shaver with the Samson juicers. This provides the added benefit of extracting oil from hempseeds and for crushing ice and how good would it be if the juicer sliced up your salad making it hassle-free which is what the Samson juicer does.
Which should you go for?
Your eventual decision will largely depend upon what you are looking to get from your juicer. To create juices using a wide selection of products and benefit from quick speed, improved flavour and nutritional qualities then a vertical masticating juicer will make a good choice.
If however you are looking to spend a little less and benefit from being able to create other produce, aside from juices, a horizontal masticating juicer may be the one for you. Both are great inventions, it just depends on your personal preferences!
