Quirky ingredients to include in your juicing recipes

Are you looking for a way to make your juices more exciting? Sometimes adding one simple ingredient can make all the difference to your recipes. Here are a few quirky ingredients to sample in your next juice.

Fresh turmeric root

Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory and some say it’s also a great antidepressant. It will make a lovely addition to your juices, giving them a slightly spicy, earthy taste. It can be quite an acquired taste though, so maybe only try a little in your juices to start with. You should be able to pick up fresh turmeric root from your local Whole Foods.

Hemp seeds are a great source of protein for vegans.

Hemp seeds

If you’re a vegan looking for a great source of protein, we highly recommend trying hemp seeds in your juices. Aside from being a good protein source, they also have a mild, nutty flavour, which will add a new layer to your juices.

Star fruit

Star fruit is great for combining with strawberries to create a summer punch. It has an unusual, yet pleasant citrusy flavour that also has a floral element to it. The texture of the fruit is very soft, making it ideal for juicing.

Chia seeds

If you are looking to add more fibre and protein to your juices then chia seeds will make a great choice of ingredient. They’re also known for taking on the flavour of other ingredients, so whilst they’ll add plenty of goodness to your juices, they won’t spoil the taste!

Curry powder

Curry powder may sound like an odd ingredient to add to your juices but trust us; it’s definitely worth a try! Classic yellow curry powders are ideal for adding to veggie juices to give them a real kick.

Fresh horseradish root

Horseradish is an acquired taste but if you like it, why not try adding fresh horseradish root to your juices? Horseradish works particularly well with tomato-based juices and contains plenty of nutritional elements. Horseradish root is often described as a super food, as it has antibiotic and antifungal properties. It has even been linked with fighting off cancer.

Flaxseed

Flaxseed is rich in fibre, protein and omega-3 so if you are looking to add extra nutritional value to your juices, it will make an excellent choice of ingredient.

Sea vegetables

Create juices packed full of goodness with the help of sea vegetables. Today you can find many great powders from health food stores that contain a variety of sea vegetables including kelp, wakame and spirulina. Add a teaspoon or two to your juices to boost their mineral, phytonutrients and probiotics content.

Experiment with mint, basil and other herbs.

Fresh herbs

Although you’ve probably already tried parsley in your juices at some point, there are plenty of other herbs for you to experiment with. Mint is great for adding a refreshing taste to lighter, summery juices. Basil is also great paired with vegetables and even strawberry juices. Try various different herbs in your juicing recipes to see what you like. It’ll be a process of trial and error but you never know; you may come up with a taste sensation!
